Space Suit (2019) is a mixed media sculpture exploring different forms of male dominance in an era of increased interest in escaping from earth. In the current revitalized space race, driven by billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, we consider leaving our planet behind, after reaping its resources and transforming its ecology. This incredible entitlement is demonstrated not only by one man shooting his sportscar into space, but also by those who rape, those who transform bodies into objects, and those who flaunt their position of power. Truck nuts, rabbit’s feet, and the American flag on the moon are just a few of the symbols that embody the absurdity of this moment.
The form of this sculpture is also inspired by the Ephesian Artemis, a Greek goddess of many forces, including wild animals, birth, and the moon. Though Artemis is female, the Ephesian Artemis slips between genders, and is depicted as covered in either breasts or bull testicles, depending on which interpretation you read. This contemporary version of Artemis reminds us that wilderness, sex, and the cosmos are not forces under our control.
